Why Are You Picking Me?

Why does God seem to have a knack for picking the weakest? Why does it seem that He looks down upon a nation in distress and says “That one there - the guy that’s hiding and afraid - that’s the one that will be their leader.”

When we look at Gideon from the book of Judges or David from 1st and 2nd Samuel, we see them asking “Why are you picking me, God?” David wasn’t even considered an option to be king by his dad! The prophet Samuel hear the Holy Spirit’s voice “There’s another son. The one I want isn’t here.”

So many times, the person the world has rejected is the one God has chosen to lead or reveal His glory powerfully through. God makes it clear to Gideon that He even decreased his army to ensure that the glory would be given to Him and not to Gideon or any man. God loves to make His perfect glory shine through imperfect people. He loves a humble heart who knows he isn’t perfect or equipped or “ready.” What’s funny is, none of us are truly “ready” or “perfect” it’s just that some of us are aware of that and others aren’t.

When Jesus comes on the scene, He makes it clear that “It’s the sick who need a doctor; not the well.” In His satire, He knew that all are “sick” and in need of Him; yet only few are aware of it. Others believe they are “well” or simply not in need of God.

So if you’re feeling like God is picking you to do something special for Him and you’re doubting if you’re “the man for the job” be reminded that Moses was a murderer running from the Law when God showed up and said “I pick you.” Gideon was hiding in hole in the ground from yet another attack on his land when God showed up and said “I pick you.” David was minding his own business protecting sheep when God showed up through a prophet and some oil and said “I pick you.”

Our response? Grateful obedience and reliable excellence.
